Nashville Hounds Defeat Houston Apollos Behind Garrett Nerdham Touchdown
The Nashville Hounds secured a 34-20 victory over the Houston Apollos, overcoming a 10-point deficit by rattling off 24 unanswered points and taking control on a pivotal go-ahead score in the third quarter. With the win, Nashville moved to 2-6 on the season, while Houston dropped to 4-4.
Houston built an early edge in the first half behind the boot of Owen Lonn, who connected on 29-yard and 30-yard field goals. The Apollos stretched their advantage when quarterback Nick Peasrick fumbled but recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown with 6:06 left in the second quarter, making it 13-3. Nashville responded before halftime when Ben Dat tossed a 2-yard scoring pass to Brent Faidman with 36 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Hounds carried that momentum into the second half. Zach Leatrick tied the game at 13-13 with a 52-yard field goal at 12:29 of the third quarter. The turning point arrived at 5:23 in the third when Garrett Nerdham punched in a 1-yard touchdown run, giving Nashville its first lead at 20-13.
Nashville extended its margin in the final frame. Dat connected with Faidman once more, this time for a 24-yard touchdown at 11:46 of the fourth quarter to cap the home team's 24-point run. Houston tried to claw back when Hunter Towsings scored on an 8-yard touchdown run at 7:02, bringing the Apollos within seven points at 27-20. However, the Hounds put the game away late when Travis Wearson plunged in for a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:37 remaining in regulation.
Henry Kormore fueled the Nashville defense by intercepting Peasrick twice in the third quarter. The physical contest took a toll on both rosters. Nashville defensive tackle Josh Cilin exited with a concussion and is expected to miss 2 weeks. Houston defensive end Jesse Geatham suffered a torn ACL and is out for the season.
